Ten Tips To Choosing The Web Host For You

by: Tracy Matthewman

If you have your own website, it's important to select a quality web host.

The host you use can make a difference between a successful website and one that causes more frustration than it's worth.

Here are ten tips to look for when considering a web host:

  • Unlimited disk space - you don't want to run out of disk space when people are trying to get to your site.
  • Unlimited brandwidth - if you have a lot of traffic or are doing online campaigns that generate spurts of heavy traffic, you want to ensure that the site is always available.
  • Unlimited websites - you might start with only one site, but it's nice to keep your options open for adding new ones.
  • Free setup - setup fees are really unnecessary
  • 99.9% uptime guarantee - no one can guarantee 100% uptime but 99.9% isn't bad.
  • Installed software for systems, database, scripting, email and more. This will appear as a bunch of acronyms you probably won't understand. It's OK, you don't need to.
  • CPanel hosting - this is the standard control panel making it easy to administer your site.
  • 24/7 support - when your site is down at 10.00pm, support is critical.
  • No contracts or hidden fees - everything should be made clear.
  • A fair price? Most hosts start at $10 or so a month.
