Paradigm Found: Leading and Managing for Positive Change
by: Anne Firth Murray

Recently at a presentation to a group of university students, I encouraged them to take action if they encountered an injustice, and not be passengers in life. All too often we wait for someone else to take the lead – why not them?
It therefore was really heartening to pick up Anne Firth Murray’s book Paradigm Found: Leading and Managing for Positive Change. Anne Firth Murray was certainly not an idle bystander. No, she had a dream and through perseverance and constant belief in what she was doing, she founded The Global Fund for Women, an organization that funded grassroots women’s organizations around the world and where the women at the local level decided how to use the grants.
In her book she tells her personal and fascinating story, highlighting the strengths of the approach they took and the pitfalls to avoid as she grappled with issues, particularly when naysayers challenged her vision. Much of her advice is pertinent whether you are growing a non-profit organization or a business. For example, before growing an organization, she says to be sure that you are effectively doing what you set out to do and that you focus on your systems and not be distracted from your purpose. Sound familiar? I am sure a business coach would offer similar advice before taking your business to the next level.
As a community developer in a former life, I welcomed her holistic approach of involving the women in the decision-making process. Not only is this an empowering strategy, but it ensures that the funds raised are spent where they are most needed, not where those higher up the hierarchy think they are required most.
Now in her 70s, Anne Firth Murray has retired from The Global Fund for Women, now in its 20th year of existence. She now devotes her time to her garden. “Just as I conceived of The Global Fund as a kind of wild garden, I see the garden as a microcosm of the world. And in my garden, I can always imagine and experience peace.”
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in social change. Her story is inspirational and practical at the same time, offering insights into how to build and grow an organization that is true to its vision and respectful of all involved. And as she says, “there is no beginning too small.”
