New Scholarship Honours Women's Trade Advocate

An annual scholarship and bursary have been set up by friends and family in memory of JoAnna Townsend , as a tribute to this trade advocate for women. JoAnna was best known in her role as Director of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Division at the Department of International Trade in Ottawa before she passed away early in 1994 after fighting a courageous battle against brain cancer.

The JoAnna Townsend International Business Awards will provide two Carleton University Business School students with the opportunity to spend their third year in Central or South America to study the language and business culture. The Sprott School of Business will match donations to the business scholarship and the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund will match donations to the business bursary.

"JoAnna was a global thinker, a catalyst and a role model to many," says Barbara Orser, Project Chair and an Associate Professor at the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. "The award reflects JoAnna's professional and personal interests. She inspired many people, including students, with her innovative thinking and her tireless commitment to women entrepreneurs."
