Improve Your Health With Whole Body Vibration

by: Lorie Jenkin

Owner, Lorie Jenkin, learned about Whole Body Vibration from an acquaintance in New Zealand several years ago. After extensive research into this new market, Jenkin realized the benefits of whole body vibration (“WBV”) and wanted to offer this great service to the residents of Oakville.

Whole body vibration was discovered over 40 years ago by scientists in the Russian Space Program who needed to find a way to overcome the loss of both lean body mass and bone density in their astronauts in space. The Soviet Olympic track and field program then began to utilize this technology to help improve explosive power in its athletes. Once communism fell in Russia, the secrets of WBV became known in Europe in the late 1980’s and various research studies were undertaken to verify the effects of WBV on the human body. After decades of scrutiny and research WBV exercise is now widely accepted in Europe and the technology is quickly gaining acceptance in the North American market and is now being used by various universities, professional sports teams, and health professionals in the rehabilitation and medical fields.

Good Vibrations Studios is thrilled to be among one of the first whole body vibration studios in Ontario. What sets WBV apart from traditional workout regimes is the time factor; it only takes 15 minutes to achieve what you normally would achieve in an hour-long workout in a gym. The results achieved through whole body vibration are THAT positive!! There are many vibrational plates on the market today but we have chosen to go with a Canadian made product called The WAVE. Designed by Dr. Jasper Sidhu, originally an Oakville resident, the vertical vibration plate stimulates the fast twitch muscle and works the muscle fibres at 100% of their capability rather than only 40-60% in a traditional workout and without the effort of lifting heavy weights. Because the WAVE machine efficiently contracts your muscles from 20 to 50 times per second, it exploits the natural body reflexes, therefore, involuntarily creating more reps that you would in a traditional gym workout. “You’ll be surprised,” said Jenkin, “how fatigued your body will feel after a 15 minute workout.” You also feel great afterwards because of the increased blood flow throughout your body.”

WBV is perfect for almost everybody. This form of training can benefit anyone from a person who uses a wheelchair (improve blood flow/cause muscle contraction) to a very sedentary and /or obese individual (resistance-type training) to a world-class athlete (augment explosive strength/power). Our Studio will appeal to that person who doesn’t have time for the gym, doesn’t like the gym atmosphere, or for the athlete who doesn’t want to give up their gym workout but needs that extra edge over their competition. In fact, it is encouraged that WBV be used in conjunction with traditional workouts. That’s what elite athletes on many PRO teams do…teams such as the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings and the Dallas Mavericks and Arsenal London to name only a few.

But even more encouraging is the application of whole body vibration therapy for the elderly or those people with physical disabilities such as osteoporosis, arthritis, obesity, MS, Parkinson’s, or those with debilitating joint pain, heel spurs, plantar facetious or poor circulation in legs due to diabetes or varicose veins. The WAVE is very gentle on the joints, increases bone density, improves blood circulation, strengthens and tones the muscles while also promoting increased flexibility. The benefits, health-wise, are endless.

Not to mention those who have met with great results are those wishing to not only tone, but lose inches or weight. “All weight loss programs encourage people to exercise to aid in their weight loss efforts … this is your ticket.” said Jenkin. When used in conjunction with a good weight loss program, clients who have never been to a gym, are too intimidated to go to a gym or are not able to endure the rigors of a traditional gym workout…all have seen encouraging results with whole body vibration simply because it is so easy.

The studio concept of WBV is thriving in Europe, yet virtually unheard of here in North America. Although the girls at Good Vibrations Studios are always there for hands-on training and assistance, the WAVE machine is easy to use and with dedicated use will show great results for everyone. So tell me….who doesn’t have fifteen minutes, two to three times a week to improve their health?!
